In one of the most dramatic finishes of the season, the Essex Eagles held off a furious late rally from the Chittenden Chiefs to maintain control of second place in the standings.

For much of the game, Essex appeared to be in command. Strong puck management and timely scoring gave the Eagles a multi-goal cushion heading into the final minutes. With playoff positioning tightening across the league, the two points carried significant weight.

However, the Chiefs had other plans.

Late Push Sparks Chaos

Trailing by three goals with just over three minutes remaining, Chittenden elected to pull their goaltender early in favor of the extra attacker. The aggressive strategy immediately shifted momentum.

The Chiefs capitalized quickly, finding the back of the net to cut into the deficit. Moments later, sustained pressure in the offensive zone led to a second goal. With time winding down and energy building on the Chiefs’ bench, Chittenden struck again — scoring three goals in the final three minutes to bring the game within one.

The late surge forced Essex into full defensive posture as they worked to protect their lead.

Eagles Close It Out

Despite the momentum swing, the Eagles responded with key defensive plays down the stretch. Shot blocks, strong puck clears, and a crucial defensive-zone faceoff win helped preserve the narrow advantage until the final horn.

With the victory, Essex solidifies its position in second place as the race toward the Jay Peak Playoffs continues.

Looking Ahead

While the Eagles secured the points, the Chiefs’ late-game execution demonstrated resilience and offensive firepower that could prove significant in the weeks ahead. If this matchup is a preview of postseason hockey, fans can expect tightly contested battles where no lead is safe.

As the standings tighten, every shift — and every minute — continues to matter.
